With a series victory and winning road trip all but locked up the Brewers' bullpen couldn't shut the door on the D-backs. All six of Arizona's runs were surrendered in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the previously-automatic Salomon Torres not only blew a save, the took the loss. Games like these are tough to take, but the Crew is coming home for a while after going a respectable 5-5 and gaining a
game on the Cubs on the 10-game road trip.

- Did you hear C.C. Sabathia might be traded to the Brewers?: I bet he won’t… or maybe I just hope he doesn’t. Either way, links to rumors lay HERE, Hear and HuRR.

- Jays may shop A.J. Burnett for a MLB-ready shortstop: Dierkes names Hardy and Alcides Escobar as potential bait. Hardy’s value is pretty high right now, but do we want to part with him and force a Double-A infielder to be rushed into a starting role? Furthermore, will Burnett accept his ’09 option… and do we even want him to?

- J.J. Hardy extended his hitting streak to 15 games and hit another homer in Thursday's game, along with three other hits.

- Speaking of Hardy, made two pretty good plays in the field in the loss. Prior to the shimmer glove work, The Yost Infection asked Brian and Bill to stop talking about J.J. Hardy: The blog lists reasons Hardy is not the defensive juggernaut the broadcasting duo claims he is. Scout.com disagrees.

- Ryan Braun sat out for the second straight game today. He’ll get a ton of work against the multitude of Pirates lefties slated to start this weekend. With said lefties starting, expect Hall-Star to get some serious ABs this weekend too. For those who are too attend a game this weekend, do the human race and your fellow fanbase a favor and don’t boo him.

- Rickie Weeks started for the first time since Monday.

- Matt LaPorta and Mat Gamel aren’t the only Brewers prospect trade bait: Fan Graphs says Michael Brantley and Cole Gilespie could be decent bargaining chips too. Toss in Gwynn Jr. and Salome while you’re at it. Plus, why is nobody mentioning David Welch? Dude had a no-no (seven inning, but still), in the number one starter and All-Star representative for Huntsville. Not that I want him to go, but he seems to be pretty far under the radar of trade speculators out there in blogland.

- Eli says the Brewers and Twins are coming on strong, just when it’s beginning to matter: Tis a long season, but it’s good to see Milwaukee’s Best hanging tough (minus today).

- Hire Jim Essian has some Cubs news: If you’re into that kind of thing.

- The boys from Goat Riders insist “Fooker” will be OK: Man Chicago fans make Yankee fans look patient sometimes; The Goatriders couldn't be more right... the guy is having a good season. It may not show in his HR or RBI figures, but his average is more than respectable and he's always on base.

- St. Louis and Chicago will square off in a three game set this weekend. This can only help the Brewers.

- The Brewers are guaranteed to finish at least 5-5 on their 10-game road trip and could go 6-4 if they can manage to beat the Diamondbacks with Brandon Webb on the mound tomorrow. Parra, who has had a very strong month, will toe the hill for the Crew. I consider that a successful trip, especially since they've gained ground on the Cubs and haven't lost any to the Cardinals over that stretch.

- The Brewers start a HUGE 10-game home stand against three very beatable teams (Pittsburgh, Colorado and Cincinnati) Friday that will wrap up their pre-All-Star break schedule. The home stand will go a long way towards determining how serious of contenders the Brewers are in the division as the trade deadline and a four-game end-of-the-month Miller Park series against the Cubs loom.

- McClung did not have his best stuff today, but the Brewers found a way to win. The TV guys said about 1,000 times that Seth is dealing with a "dead arm phase."

- Hardy has hit in 14 straight games after going 2-4 tonight. He's on fire right now. And he used to be a Diamondbacks fan. A lot of Hardy's family and friends have been attending the games in this series.

- Cameron went 2-4 and drove in two big runs.

- Rickie Weeks crushed a pinch-hit home run. He hasn't played due to food poisoning, but came up big tonight.

- The D-Back's Chris Young did everything he could to push the game in Arizona's favor. He made two spectacular defensive plays, including a catch up against the outfield wall to end the ninth for the Crew.

- Arizona is under .500 and winning the division... Meanwhile, the Brewers have the third best record in the NL and sit at third in their division.

- Braun is slumping and was given the night off. He may sit out tomorrow's game against Brandon Webb as well. Braun has a sprained hand that may be contributing to his struggles.

- The Brewers would reportedly not trade more than one of the "Huntsville 5" in any deal. And the trade rumors/speculation continues...

- Mota may be tipping his pitches.

- Braun says he'll participate in the home run derby if he's invited. I'd think with the hand injury, he'd go easy while he can, but maybe it's a good sign that he's not too concerned about it.

- Mound Talk lists LaPorta as the #2 prospect in baseball behind Jay Bruce. Gamel is 13th, Salome is 46th and Jeffress is 49th.

- This FanGraphs post says Jeffress could be "very special."

- Caleb Gindl is the SportsBubbler.com Brewers Prospect of the Week.

- Diamond Huggers gives Sheets their mid-season NL Comeback Player of the Year award.

- Prince Fielder has the 30th best trade value of all players in MLB, according to this FanGraphs post.

- Recent Brewers draft pick catcher Mike Roberts homered on the first pitch he saw as a professional. He drove in five. Nice start.

- Brew Crew Ball's Jeff Sackmann says the Brewers performance against relievers this season is nothing to worry about.

- Brewers Fanatics says no thanks to a Sabathia trade.

- Miller Park is the only stadium in baseball to sell more sausages than hot dogs. That's because we've got taste in Wisconsin.

- Anthony Witrado has a mailbag.

- The Cardinals may be looking to add Matt Holliday.

- D-Backs catcher Chris Snyder has possibly the worst injury I've ever heard of. He had surgery today.

- Pirates closer Matt Capps is out for eight weeks with a right shoulder problem.

- The Jose Canseco saga is beyond believable... If he's not giving players up in books or challenging anyone who will take him on to a fight, he's a hired gun in a softball tournament...

J.J. Hardy and the Brewers got off to an early start as they chased Randy Johnson from the game in a mere 3.2 innings with a seven run offensive explosion. Jeff Suppan nearly allowed Arizona back into the game, but held on for the win thanks much in part to scoreless frames logged by Mitch Stetter, David Riske and Salomon Torres - who nailed down his 14th save. Joe Dillon, the last remaining Brewers position player with at least moderate playing time without a homer, even went deep. The Crew is 4-4 on this treacherous jaunt with two games left to play before retuning to Beertown.

- The Brewers elected to keep Eric Gagne in the bullpen during an undeniably set-up situation. Keep an eye on what role (if any) is relinquished upon him in the coming games.

- Bill "William" Hall made two outstanding defensive plays tonight!

- Al's Ramblings was informed by an e-mailer that Peter Gammons said Milwaukee was willing to deal one of its "Huntsville 5" and possibly either Hardy or Weeks if the price is right: Al hopes if anyone goes it's Angel Salome, and I agree; with Vinny Rottino in Nashville, LuCroy rising quickly and 2008 first round pick Brett Lawrie in tow, Salome is expendable - and short. Alcides Escobar or possibly Bill Hall would fill the possible middle infield vacancy. The e-mailer mentioned the Brewers may seek two starting pitchers - an exciting, but scary possibility.

- Ken Rosenthal says the Brewers were among the teams who've inquired about Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla: Doug is very familiar with the Rangers organization and has traded with them before. Padilla is hot and cold, but has been capable of around 10-15 wins and 200 IP in past seasons. He's to make $12 M in each of the next two seasons and is currently pitching the best he ever has in his decade long career, so he may be a hefty gamble... but could act as possible '09 rotational insurance if free agency sends Sheets to the wind. I'm cooking up an expanded post on pitchers for Friday.

- Tribe Report claims Brewers and Rays to be front runners for the late season services of C.C. Sabathia: It (very meekly) alludes to Prince being a potential chip in the deal. I'd hope/prefer the front office wait until the offseason to deal the face of our organization because he will garner a more sizable and permanent haul of talent.

- Speaking of the aforementioned "Huntsville 5", double it and that's how many Stars will represent the Brewers' Double-A affiliate on the Southern League North Division all-star team. That's a good sign, and could bode well for supplying chips for a deadline deal.

- Torres' closer role on the hot seat?: As if, brah!

- Prince Fielder and Matt LaPorta both crack a list of Top 25 Players Under 25 Years Old: Prince is No. 2 and LaPorta, sans a big league at bat, is already No. 20.

- Brewers Fanatics have a prospect watch on Huntsville third baseman Mat Gamel.

- Miller Park may sell Coors: As many know, Miller and Coors merged. I see no threat of Miller NOT being sold at the park, if anything, maybe this possible addition could bring fine brews like Blue Moon into the fold. It'll be real news when they sell Blatz.

- Going into Tuesday’s game the Brewers had the 7th highest road attendance in the majors: I’m not sure why Pittsburgh tops the Crew. I guess people like a near lock for a home team victory… or the sexual allure of Jack Wilson.

- Friction Magazine, a brand new Milwaukee publication interviews Nashville Sounds’ Vinny Rottino: He graces the cover of the magazine’s premiere issue.

- Economical ways to see your Brewers: There's some good tips here. Plus, a fact some may not know... you are permitted to bring in sealed, nonalcoholic beverages in plastic bottles AND you can score free player pins with a slight donation during select weekend home games.

- Fangraphs talks about some Brewers, then talks about more Brewers: Basically it says the Brewers aren't confident in either LaPorta and Gamel because they are (and this is news to me) deficient to the players that are blocking them... or something. If anything, having great players in place so that seemingly just as good players can take their time to progress into MLB forces can be looked upon as a good, nay, great thing.

- Rickie Weeks sat out Tuesday with a stomach virus: He somehow still managed to strand six runners in scoring position (Kidding!).

- The Reds reportedly offered the Mariners Ken Griffey Jr. and Seattle declined: Hopefully he can at least take comfort starting an All-Star game he had no business being in. But I guess an outstanding career gives you an advantage in the fan vote.

- Kerry Wood gives Sox fans the finger: His slight movement of arms miraculously didn't have its usual result of a year-long trip to the DL. Classy guy, this Wood.

- Dan Attanasio, son of Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, and his band Pan Am will play Summerfest on Sunday.

- Here's an L.A. shirt most Angels fans can get behind.

- This was one of those games where a bounce here and there (or a hit with runners in scoring position) could have made a huge difference.

- Bush was not sharp, going five innings and allowing five runs (four earned).

- Hardy continued his hot hitting by going 3-5. He has a 12-game hitting streak.

- Braun continued his cold streak by going 0-5. He's now 0 for his last 12.

- I don't like these late starts.

- The Cubs and Cards won, making this loss a little worse.

- There's "proof" that legalizing gay marriage helps sports teams win. We need to start campaigning in Wisconsin before the playoff push. Maybe that Pee Your Pants for the Brewers guy could start up LegalizeGayMarriageForTheBrewers.com?

- Manny Parra is "starting to figure things out." Parra has looked great lately. Can the Brewers count on him to be a #2 type starter beginning with next season? I think he certainly has that kind of upside (or more).

- Jeff Sackmann at Brew Crew Ball says 44 wins looks pretty good at the halfway point when you consider everything.

- Buster Olney still sees the Brewers as the number one contender for Sabathia. Haudricourt is not so sure.

- Melvin says nobody is off limits in trades, but he's not going to do anything stupid.

- Al's Ramblings says Aaron Harang could be a match for the Brewers. He notes that his name "has not come come up in any trade discussions." It's true that he hasn't been discussed much, but he has at least been in some Internet discussions. His name was in an "In the News" post on this very site a week ago after Eli's MLB Rumors noted that Harang could be available. I still don't think the Reds would deal him inside their own division though...

- Joe Blanton's trade value is sinking fast.

- Yost says Fielder's numbers are where he expected them to be. I understand he's not going to hit 50 home runs every year, but he's on pace for 84 RBI. I certainly expect more than that from our clean-up hitter.

- Braun is closing in on the third NL outfielder All-Star spot. He's just 33,000 votes behind Fukudome.

- There was a Chris Capuano sighting. The lefty pitcher, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, visited the team at Chase Field. His rehab is going well and he plans on being ready to pitch by next April.

- Brewers! Brewers! Keep Turnin' Up the Heat! takes a look at Gamel, LaPorta, and Jeffress.

- Haudricourt has a mailbag.

- Zambrano will return to the Cubs Friday and Soriano could return before the All-Star break.

- Ramirez will miss three games for the Cubs as he attends to family matters in the Dominican.

- The Sun Times notes that Chicago native, actor and well-known Cubs fan John Cusack wore neutral colors to a White Sox/Cubs game this weekend. Personally, I think the bigger story is that he was wearing a freakin' fanny pack and still showed up to the game with Jodi O'Keefe.

- Rob Mackowiak is back in the NL Central after signing a minor-league deal with the Reds.

- Winning the Atlanta Series on the Road
- Dave Bush's pitching well this week again!
- Manny being Manny. He cranked his fastball up to 95 in Minnesota!!
- Corey Hart and JJ Hardy looking tough at the plate (Both players over .300 for the week on the road)
- The slow climb towards the top
- Getting a chance to see Gamel and LaPorta play for the Futures Game

Things I Don't:
- Sheets testing Free Agency
- Making Kevin Slowey look so good that Tyler HAD to pick him up for his Fantasy Team
- That feeling in my stomach again i.e. - Gagne returning and no one on the team is really bullish about it.

So, one out of three against the Twins is a little disappointing, but the Brewers have still gained a game and a half on the Cubs over the last four days as the Northsiders got swept on the South side.

- The Brewers got three-hit today in the loss. It was ugly.

- Parra was superb on Saturday. More HERE.

- Joe Mauer's home run won Friday's game for the Twins. More HERE.

- Gagne has been activated from the DL with DiFelice getting sent down.

- The C.C. Sabathia to the Brewers rumblings continue. Personally, I don't see it happening, but you know what they say, "Where there's smoke, there's fire."

SI.com's Jon Heyman lists the Brewers "among the most interested" in Sabathia.
Rosenthal says the Brewers have the prospects to make a deal for C.C.
Jayson Stark quotes a "baseball man who has spoken with GM Doug Melvin" as saying if Sabathia winds up somewhere other than Milwaukee, "it won't be because they're afraid to give up their prospects."
Melvin and Ash continue to say they are looking for starting pitching. Any pitcher they add would have to be a significant upgrade to justify trading prospects, which leaves guys like Sabathia and Rich Harden.
Between the Green Pillars says adding Sabathia would be great, but, "Ultimately, this doesn't need to be a all or nothing year for the franchise and Melvin needs to make sure he doesn't treat it as such."
The Bucky Channel says a Sabathia-to-Milwaukee trade is "more likely than you think."
Brew Crew Ball has a poll on the possibility of a Sabathia trade.
Sabathia is not hurting his value. He has an ERA under 2 over the last 2.5 months.

Just wanted to add a few links to Tyler's earlier news offerings...

- The Cubs and Cardinals both lost today so the Brewers have moved within one game of the Cards (and the wildcard) and five and a half of the Cubs.

- The Orioles became the second team to win a series at Wrigley this season. The Brewers have done it twice (so the Sun Times headline if you follow the link is actually false).

- Between the Green Pillars says Sheets is all but gone in free agency, but the Brewers could still give him "one hell of a send off."

- Haudricourt has a piece on Salomon Torres. Where would the Brewers be right now without Torres? He's having a great season so far and looks like a natural in the closer's role.

- Brewers catching prospect Angel Salome is making up for lost time (due to a suspension) at Huntsville. It would be nice if a Brewers catching prospect panned out for once and Salome is starting to look like a solid bet to make it to Milwaukee at some point.

- Speaking of prospects who will likely appear in Brewer blue one day, LaPorta and Gamel were named to the U.S. Future's Game roster. That's a nice honor for the two young sluggers.

- Brew Crew Ball breaks down the top Brewers' prospects.

- The Twins have been playing very well lately and have won nine in a row. More HERE. Hopefully the Brewers can cool them off this weekend in Minnesota.

The Brewers are off today and will travel to Minneapolis to begin a three game series with their frenemies across the Mississippi, the Twins. Here's a brief round-up of the day that wasn't for the Milwaukee Brewers.

- Ben Sheets will test the waters of free agency this off season: Let’s hope he gives the Brewers the hometown discount, otherwise he’s probably gone.

- Double-A prospects Matt LaPorta and Mat Gamel were named to the U.S. Futures Team roster.

- Shawn Chacon threw Astros GM Ed Wade to the ground: This comes as a result of frustration of his banishment to the bullpen. He has since been suspended (edit: released).

- Ken Rosenthal isn’t so fast to put all the blame on Chacon for the incident: He says Wade yelled at Chacon in the clubhouse's crowded dining room and told him to "(expletive) look in the mirror."

- Russell Branyan uses a unique form of training to keep his eyes sharp.

- The Cubs have been accused of stealing signs: Goat Riders of the Apocalypse has a unique take on the accusations.

- Let's get to know Tim Dillard.

- Bucks news on Right Field Bleachers?!?!: I never thought I'd see the day when news regarding the redheaded stepchild of Wisconsin sports would appear on this site, but in some exciting NBA news (oxymoron?) the Bucks have traded Yi Jianlian and Bobby Simmons to the Nets for All-Star forward Richard Jefferson. I like Jefferson a lot. He and Redd could get the Bucks back in the playoffs - not that it's a difficult feat in the East.

- The Brewers dropped the chance at a sweep in Atlanta.

- Suppan threw six innings and gave up four runs.

- Weeks is showing signs of improvement since returning from the DL. He went 2-4 today.

- Rivera got a rare start. Kendall will be back to catch Friday. More HERE.

- Braun has a sore hand, but is battling through it.

- Pitching prospect Jeremy Jeffress has gone 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in his last five starts. He's starting to show his incredible potential.

- Jake Odorizzi named player of the year by USA Today. Odorizzi, the Brewers second pick in the draft, signed with the club and will be ranked among the Brewers top prospects when he joins a Brewers affiliate.

- Top draft choice Brett Lawrie will play for the Canada junior team. He may also play on the Canadian Olympic team. Hopefully he can find time to nail down a contract before the August 15 deadline...

- This Braves blog wants nothing to do with Sheets as a free agent.

- This Yankees blog wants the Bronx Bombers to trade for Prince. I don't have time to research the prospects he threw out (aside from knowing Kennedy and Hughes have certainly not lived up to the ridiculous hype they've received), but I can say it's not going to happen, at least anytime soon. The Brewers have no reason to deal Fielder as he's under their control for the next three seasons. If LaPorta or Gamel switch to first, prove they're a suitable replacement at the major-league level for Fielder and a team offers a ridiculous deal for Prince (i.e. a number of highly ranked, near major-league ready pitching prospects), it might happen, but even that is at least a season away.

- The 1986 Brewers draft class ranks as the 15th best of all time according to Baseball America. Sheffield, Vaughn and Hamilton is a pretty good haul.

- Zach Braddock is the Sports Bubbler Prospect of the Week.

- Brewers Fanatics has a fact or fiction post.

- Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Brewers are stocked at AA and could deal for a pitcher. How much faith can you put in the article when he calls LaPorta a first baseman and talks about catcher Salome Angel though?

- Fukudome has calf tightness for the Cubs.

Record: 43-34, Third Place
Games Behind Cubs: 5

Milwaukee leaped out of the gates offensively tonight, and managed to narrowly avert a ninth inning heartbreak as Salomon Torres struggled - for once. Dave Bush followed up his near no-no with another lengthy and low scoring outing - and another win. The Brewers have won four straight and eight of their last 10. These road wins in Atlanta are huge in helping the Brewers obtain a winning road trip at what seems to be the most difficult jaunt left on the team's schedule.

- Dave Bush got his ERA below five on the season with tonight’s gem: He’s really stepped up for the Crew in April with four quality starts (3 wins) in five June outings and an ERA in the low threes in the span.

- Milwaukee gained a full game on the Cubs, who suffered a rare loss at home tonight.

- Starting arm a priority of the Brewers: I'll spare the 10,000 C.C. Sabathia links and refer reader to this short and sweet summary.

- Ken Rosenthal says Melvin might wait until the offseason to trade Fielder (if at all): Rosenthal cites the Richie Sexson deal prior to the 2005 season that brought the Brewers six MLB ready players. If Fielder is to go, a winter trade would probably gather more teams willing to make some deals.

- Juilan Tavarez refuses assignment to Nashville: It sounded like he was going to swallow his pride and try to return to Milwaukee as a starter, but I guess not. Whatever. - Sheets dominated. He gave up one run in a complete-game performance and struck out seven. He retired the final 16 batters in order. Sheets is now 9-1 with a 2.59 ERA and is firmly planting himself in the All-Star game starter discussion as well as the NL Cy Young race.

- Mike Cameron returned and homered in his first plate appearance.

- Weeks went three for four in his second game back.

- The Brewers are the only team in the major leagues with six players who have at least 10 home runs this season.

- The Brew Town Beat notes that the Brewers have the third best record in the NL, but sit at third in their division. With the win tonight, the Brewers moved within 1.5 games of the Cardinals. The Red Birds are firmly in the Brew Crew's sites.

- Torres has been incredible since taking over as the closer. He got a much needed day off today.

- Is Russell Branyan this year's Ryan Braun? Uh, sort of... Hopefully The Muscle keeps tearing the cover off the ball. He's been an absolutely huge boost to the team.

- The Phillies reportedly sent a scout to take a look at Ben Sheets. Not happening, Philadelphia.

- That same post mentions Aaron Harang may be available. Harang is being paid $6.75 million in 2008, $11 million in 2009 and $12.5 million in 2010 with a 2011 club option for $12.75 million with a $2 million buyout. Harang is not pitching great this season (3-10 with a 4.33 ERA) and it's hard to imagine the Reds trading him within the division, but if he truly is on the trading block, he might be the most attractive pitcher available. He's a workhorse that the team could control at a reasonable cost for three and a half seasons. It would take a top prospect and then some, but it may be worth it for three and half seasons of a frontline starter.

- Kapler happy with comeback decision. In other news, consumers are unhappy with the rising gas prices and Wisconsin winters are cold. Seriously though, Kapler's comeback is a nice story and I'm happy to have the guy on the team.

- Bill Hall changed his batting stance.

- Mark DiFelice is in the middle of a historic streak. Since 1956, only 12 pitchers have reached 10 games in a row to start a career without issuing a walk. DiFelice has now pitched in 10 games without issuing a walk.

- Laynce Nix is in the news, for the wrong reasons...

They're 16-20 on the road and just got swept by the Rays in Tampa, who then promptly lost two of three at home to Houston. The rotation was a big enough question mark for the Cubs before losing Zambrano. Dempster is playing way, way, way over his head and will come down. Lilly sucks. Marquis is a notoriously bad second-half player and is not lighting the world on fire to begin with. And Rich Hill is in AAA and struggling. What happens if Zambrano's injury is worse than they think? The Cubs haven't exactly been great at diagnosing pitching injuries over the years (see: Wood, Kerry and Prior, Mark). Oh yeah, they're also without one of their best offensive players for some time now. No team has won 100 games since 2005 and the Cubs aren't doing it in 2008.

- Bleed Cubbie Blue posts a photo of the "now-traditional home outfielder win bump." Hey, does that "tradition" look familiar?

- Zambrano threw a temper tantrum after getting put on the DL. Imagine how good this guy would be if he wasn't a complete nut job... Thankfully he can't keep his cool though.

Things I Like:
- Manny and McClung battling. Both had real good starts, but had to battle for them. It's a real good sign when they can work out of jams and an even better sign when they can work out of the 6th inning.
- Starters getting the wins! They've been pitching well, so it's nice to see most of them get another tally in the W column
- Prince Fielder on Fire (5 HR in 6 Games)
- Craig Counsell hitting over .300 in his final week replacing Rickie

Things I Don't:
- There's not much to not like this week, other than Suppan's start (His shortest outing since 1998!). The team hit well and had timely hitting. Pitchers did very well across the board. Even Bill Hall hit a home run! Oh, wait, I got it...
- Eric Gagne getting closer to returning. Salomon is doing just great without him in the bullpen.
- Ridiculous Trade Ideas from fans such as trading for Rich Harden and AJ Burnett from the SAME PEOPLE complaining about Ben Sheets being "injury prone". Um, Hello??? These two also have felt the bite of the injury bug, especially Harden. I had a whole post on my feelings about this, but felt it was too mean.

- The Brewers took two of three from Baltimore after sweeping Toronto. They wrapped up the home stand at 6-3. Not bad, considering they only took one from Minnesota. Now they go on an important 10-game road trip.

- Parra was not strong today, but held on to the win thanks to some nice double-play balls. More HERE.

- McClung continued his stellar pitching in a win over the Orioles Saturday. More HERE.

- Suppan stunk Friday and the Brewers took the loss. More HERE.

- Buster Olney says the Brewers could go after C.C. Sabathia. I think it would take at least one of the Brewers top prospects (LaPorta, Gamel, Escobar) in a package and I can't see Milwaukee parting with one of those guys.

Al at Al's Ramblings agrees, saying the Brewers would almost certainly have to include one or two "untouchables" that include the list above and Brantley and Salome.

Milwaukee can't afford to deal top minor-league talent because they have to build around those players that will be under their control for a long time, but the team will have to delicately balance the "win now" mode with the "build for the future" mentality as the trade deadline approaches. I don't think Sabathia is a match because he will be a free agent after the season, but the Brewers could decide a half season of Sabathia and the two draft picks they'd receive when Sabathia left in free agency would be worth one of their better prospects. I'd be more on board if Sabathia was pitching like last year instead of sporting an ERA over 4 and a 5-8 record.

- Haudricourt weighs in on the possibility of a Sabathia-to-Milwaukee deal.

- The Brewers hit more home runs than anyone in June with 39.

- Jake Odorizzi, the Brewers second draft choice this year, signed a deal with the club.

- Stetter is back up on the big-league team and Dillard has been sent back down to Nashville.

- Hunt talks about the Brewers great attendance so far this season. I can't tell you how nice it is to go to a Brewers game and see the seats filled with people. And those people are wearing Brewers' gear, not Packers'. It's a different era for baseball in Wisconsin and it's looking good. It took a little while to earn the fans' trust again after fielding uncompetitive teams for over a decade, but I think the Brewers are really building a strong fan base again. It seems especially strong with younger people, which is encouraging for the future of the club.

Dave Bush joined the pitching party, riding a no hitter into the eighth and Prince hit a memorable inside the park home run. Tim Dillard and David Riske did their part to make the last inning interesting, but thanks to Salomon Torres, the Brewers were able to narrowly escape with the win and series sweep. They've won four straight and look to be playing their best baseball of the season from top to bottom.

- For the third day in a row, every NL Central team but the Brewers lost!

- Lyle Overbay broke up Bush's no hitter with no outs in the eighth with a triple and later homered: We hate to see you leave, Lyle... but with yesterday's performance, we love to watch you go. Go be awesome against some other NL team.

- If it wasn't already hard enough being a Cubs fan (referring of course to the requisite Old Style drinking and reverie of hacks like Ron Santo) Carlos Zambrano will be shelved for at least one start with shoulder trouble: Cubs fans can start forming excuses for floundering in the standings and falling short yet again starting... NOW.

- Brewers top prospect Matt LaPorta is listed as day to day with a bruised back following a collision with an outfield wall: It sounds like it could have been serious. Needless to say, fans should be glad it wasn't worse.

- FOX Sports' Dayn Perry speculates which manager is the next to be offed: He puts Ned Yost in the "Wait and See" category - citing that the Brewers, though winning 15 of their last 21, are beating teams under .500. I'm sorry, but isn't that exactly how the Cubs sprung out the gates... playing bad teams at home for pretty much the entire season? Chicago is 7-11 against teams with an above.500 record. It's probably a bit early to place Ned's head on the chopping block.

- Brew Town Beat scribes a letter to William "Bill" Hall: I wouldn't say Russell Branyan has "quietly socked 10 dingers" though. He's pretty much the law around these parts lately.

- Yahoo!'s Steve Henson says the Brewers are neither buyers nor sellers as the trade deadline looms: As Wild Card, nay, the division well within grasp, a move would make sense, but with the way Milwaukee is playing right now, maybe no news (in the transaction report) might be good news. Personally, it's doubtful the back end of the rotation can keep up the insane outings they've all managed to post since the Boston series - so I wouldn't hate them acquiring a stop gap starter down the stretch.

- If you've been living amongst the apparent ice on Mars and have come back to read baseball blogs, HERE is what Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said about Adam Dunn. But it gets better, Dunn's answer is an instant classic.

This Weekend: The Orioles come to town fresh off their sweep of the Houston Astros. Jeff Suppan is to start tonight, followed in the rotation by Seth McClung Saturday and Manny Parra on Sunday. Some variation of the RFB crew will be there both Saturday and Sunday... so apologies in advance should a lack of posts result. But, if you haven't checked out our record (Mine 6-1, RFB total 8-1) we'll try and bring home some wins to compensate.

As mentioned by Jared in the previous post, David Riske has rejoined the team and is eligible to pitch this afternoon. To make room for Riske on the roster the Brewers designated pitcher Julian Tavarez for assignment this morning.

Tavarez, who was signed by Milwaukee in late May after being released by Boston, was 0-1 with an ERA of 8.59 in seven appearances as a Brewer. He will have 10 days to accept his assignment to Nashville (AAA) or will be released - forefiting the remainder of the Brewers' salary obligations.

Being that Tavarez was sought out and signed just weeks ago, both Tim Dillard and Mark DiFelice seemed more likely candidates to be sent down upon Riske's return to the clubhouse - but the less-experienced pair have shown they can cut it at the big league level. Dillard has a 1.17 ERA in 7.1 innings and DiFelice has a 4.35 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 10.1 innings - but has come on strong lately, giving up only two earned runs in his last seven appearances (9.1 innings).

- Sheets did not have his best stuff, but the Brewers still found a way to win. Sheets is now 8-1.

- Russell Branyan is ridiculous. Another game. Another home run. He has 18 hits. Nine of them are home runs. And that's in only 57 at bats.

- Torres pitched 1 1/3 for the save. It was clutch. He has been spectacular this season.

- Hardy returned to the line-up.

- Outstanding baserunning helped win this game.

- For the second day in a row, all of the teams in the NL Central besides the Brewers lost. Making up some ground.

- The Brewers are 17-9 since May 20. Unfortunately, the Cubs are too. It's a nice turnaround for the Brewers after a slow start though. Hopefully they can keep it up.

- Riske will rejoin the team today. With Mota's struggles continuing (another rough outing tonight), how long until Riske becomes the set up man? More HERE.

- Prince reportedly owes more than $400,000 in back taxes to the IRS. How does this happen to so many guys? Hopefully he can clear it up soon. If not, the fat contract he gets through arbitration this offseason should help. In the end, this is Prince's business and I'm sure he'll handle it. More HERE.

- Saber Scouting has a very nice, detailed look at Brewers' pitching prospect Jeremy Jeffress. The conclusion is encouraging.

He has #1 starter potential if everything comes together and you can’t say that about very many humans on Earth.

The long ball came in handy for the Brewers again tonight, as they were able to chase Jays starter Dustin McGowan after the fourth inning and work Toronto's bullpen ragged in the 7-0 win. Even Craig Counsell chimed in with his first homer of the season (35th career), joining Prince Fielder, Russell Branyan and - twice - Ryan Braun in the tater party. Manny Parra went seven scoreless for his fifth straight win.

- EVERYONE ELSE in the NL Central lost tonight: You don't see that much.

- Dan and Steve ask why fans should vote for Ryan Braun when he doesn't deserve it: The fact that Griffey is 3rd among NL outfielders in voting proves the fan vote is flawed. Beyond Ben Sheets, Braun is probably the only unquestionable Brewers All-Star this season. His two homers might help get some votes.

- Lyle Overbay went 1 for 3 with a walk in his Miller Park return: We love you, Lyle.

- Chuckie Hacks has links and thoughts about rumors regarding "600+ pounds of baseball players" (Prince/Sabathia): In this blogger's opinion, tading Fielder shouldn't even be considered at least until the end of this season. The cost to essentially have C.C. for two months seems a bit lofty. I guess we'll see what happens though.

- The Junkball Blues shows how much the Brewers starting rotation has stepped up since May 15: The back end of the rotation (Parra and McClung) have especially played a huge role in anchoring the staff and, thus, giving Milwaukee the chance to win.

Things I Like:

- Cameron, Prince, and Kendall all quietly hitting over .300 this week
- Winning a series against Houston in Houston
- NL Central getting some respect
- So after years of going to games at Miller Park, my section finally won something...

Things I Don't:
- ...10% off of $70+ polo's only
- Julian Tavarez in a meaningful spot
- How frustrated I get with Bill Hall nowadays. I try to root for the guy, even with his recent questionable actions, but he consistently mucks up both in the batter's box and on the field. The walk on Sunday was a good sign.
- Prince being a liability at first. It's been noticeable for some reason this week. Dropping balls thrown to him, being out of place, not confident in his decisions. His defense has been good for quite a long time, so I hope this is just a small blip. Also, question to RFB nation: Has anyone else noticed that Prince looks like he gets off balance during his swing this year? He seems to be seeing the ball better (see THINGS I LIKE), but it's something I've been noticing and could be a reason towards his lack of power (and not the evil asparagus of doom).

Seth McClung: The Greatest Former Devil Ray Starting Pitcher Turned Relief Pitcher Returned Starter in Milwaukee Brewers Franchise History

No, seriously. I just thought I'd make mention of how well Seth McClung has pitched since entering the starting rotation.

I know I wasn't alone of my initial uncertainty of how he'd man the role, but five starts, a 3-2 record during the stint and I must say I am impressed. It's not like McClung is blowing anyone away; he's giving up runs in every start (including six against Atlanta) and leaving final lines with a few smudges - but he's been able to anchor the back end of the rotation, win more than he's lost and (paramount to anything else) keep the Brewers in games.

Moreover, he's managed to last six innings in his last three starts and hadn't surrendered a single walk in three of the five starts and just one free pass in Houston.

I don't know how long the McClung will stay in the rotation or how pretty the remainder of his tenure will look, but as of now he's solidified a role as the No. 5 starter - even if Milwaukee outsources for another arm before the trade deadline. Of the eight or nine names that potentially crowded the mound of starters this offseason, the name Seth McClung was not a legitimate one to me... and I wasn't alone.

But this is one occasion I'm sure most fans won't mind eating their words.

- Seth McClung has been a very effective starting pitcher for the Brewers. He pitched six innings of two-run ball today to help the Brewers take their first win against the Twins this season.

- It was the Brewers first win against an AL opponent this season. They're now 1-5. Hopefully they can improve on that against the Blue Jays and Orioles this week.

- Kendall had three hits in the game. It'd be nice if his bat heated up again.

- Many of the Brewers had their kids at the game Sunday for Father's Day.

- Brewers pitchers have had 15 quality starts in the last 19 games. That's encouraging considering the patchwork rotation.

- Saturday's loss hurt. Another inch or two and the team would've been pummeling Prince's head at home, but instead his blast bounced off the wall for a triple and the Brewers lost the game in 12. Tough loss...

- The Twins crushed the Brewers on Friday.

- Hardy may be back Tuesday.

- Riske is getting closer to a return from the DL. More HERE.

- Gagne threw a short bullpen session, but still has no timetable set for his return.

- The Brewers may keep their AA hitters together this season before considering promotions for LaPorta, Gamel, Escobar and others. It's not a bad plan, though it would be nice to be able to count on some of these hitters coming up to the bigs some time next season.

- The New York Post says Prince could be traded as early as this season or perhaps this offseason. I don't think there's any way that will happen, but anything is possible as evidenced by Melvin's quote:

"It's not something I am exploring," Brewers GM Doug Melvin said. "But I never rule out anything. The day I traded Carlos Lee, I went to work with no plans whatsoever to do it, and by midnight he was a Texas Ranger."

- Brew Town Beat says Lyle Overbay deserves the same "O-Vation" he received as a Brewer when he returns with the Blue Jays Tuesday. I agree completely and will give him one myself when I'm at Miller on Wednesday. I have nothing but respect for Lyle.

- Yost is highly criticized by fans and some in the media, but it is fairly impressive that he is the sixth longest tenured manager in MLB now.

- Hall's switch to second with Weeks out has not been smooth. He continues to struggle on defense.

- Brew Crew Ball interviews Brewers' 12th round draft pick Garrett Sherrill.

- Michael Hunt says the Brewers are lucky to have a roof when it rains. In other news, rain is wet.

- If the Cubs try to trade for A.J. Burnett, Burnett appears to be happy about the possibility of joining the Northsiders.

- The Griffey trade saga continues...

- The Pirates may keep Jason Bay after all.

- Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was taken off the field on a stretcher today with an apparent neck injury. Hopefully he is OK. Neck injuries are frightening.

Nashville Sounds History:
-The Nashville Sounds entered the Southern League in 1978 as an expansion team and as a Cincinnati Reds' Double-A team. In their first season, the Sounds finished in 9th place and drew 380,000 fans. That attendance was good for the most in the league, by nearly two-times.

-From 1980 to 1984 the Nashville Sounds were the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate.

-The Sounds became a Triple-A affiliate for the Detriot Tigers in 1985.

-The Sounds became the Brewers affiliate in 2005 and quickly became the Pacific Coast League champions. They would go on to repeat as division champions for the next two years.

-On July 15, 2006, three Sounds pitchers (Carlos Villanueva, Mike Meyers, and Alec Zumwalt) combined for a not hitter. This was the first combined no hitter in Nashville Sounds history.

-On June 25, 2007, Manny Parra threw a perfect game at Round Rock. Manny's perfect game was the second in Sounds history. He also won the 2007 Minor League Baseball Performance of the Year.

Current Sounds News:

-The Sounds are having a tough years so far. They have spent most of the season in last place.

-There isn't a lot going on for the Sounds. The big news today is the cancelled game against the Iowa Cubs. As most know, Iowa is currently devastated by horrific weather, mainly historically sever flooding. Story here. This photo gives you only a slight idea.

-Brad Nelson is really coming around this year. He has been a pretty solid Triple-A player for the last couple of years and has seen a couple September call-ups, but is excelling this year. You have to wonder if he'll be in the Brewers organization for much longer. He's really raking (.312BA, 10HR, 38RBI, .942 OPS) and there doesn't seem to be a place for him on the Brewers.

-Wisconsin native, and Tyler obsession (okay, that might be a little strong), Vinny Rottino is in the middle of a 21-game hitting streak.

-Sounds' reliever, Ben Howard, recently broke a streak of 153 relief appearances to make a start for the Sounds.
