Brewers sign RHP Jorge Julio

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

RotoWorld reports the Brewers have come to terms on a one-year deal with RHP Jorge Julio.

Julio, who will be 30 before the 2009 season, has served as a clsoer in the past. He registered 36 saves as an Oriole in 2003, and over 20 saves two other times (2002, 2004) – and 99 total. He spent time between Cleveland and Atlanta last season, primarily on a minor league basis.

Though Julio has struggled as a closer in the past (most notably, when he absolutely fall apart as the Marlins closer in the beginning of the 2007 season), this could turn into a good low-risk sign for Milwaukee – and throws another name in the hat for potential bargain closers.

Update: Tom Haudricourt confirms it’s a one-year deal, but lends no fiscal details.

Last Update: One-year/$950K… with performance bonuses. Great sign in my opinion.

Brewers to Name Ken Macha New Skipper Today

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

As Tom Haudricourt, our own Jared, and pretty much every other butterface in and around baseball has predicted, the Milwaukee Brewers are set to name Ken Macha the club’s newest manager in a 2 p.m. (CST) press conference Thursday.

Macha’s last gig came as manager of the Oakland Athletics where he led the team to a 368-280 regular season record over four seasons (2003-2006). The A’s also won two AL West titles under Macha during that period.

Congrats, Ken. I’m glad to have you aboard.

Now let the offseason begin!

Update: Tom Haudricourt is reporting Macha is signed for two years, or through 2010. No word on coin at this time.

Breaking News: Yost Fired

Monday, September 15th, 2008

It’s just in from Chicago, Brewers’ manager Ned Yost has been let go. You can’t be surprised by this move, although, it’s a bit surprising they pulled the trigger before the end of the season.

The Crew was just embarrased in Philly, getting swept in a four game series, and have lost 11 of their last 14 games.

Third base coach Dale Sveum will take over in Yost’s place with Ted Simmons being reassigned to an advisory role. Further coaching changes, including Sveum’s replacement as third base coach, will be made at a later time.

A press conference has been called for 6:30 today.

Right Field Bleachers will have more specifics later on this evening.
