Morning Ramble – 11/24

Not much…just a catch up in case you haven’t heard and/or you’d like to discuss with Joe, Kade, Scottage, Jon K, Brewerfever, or myself.

The Brewers re-signed Chris Capuano. Not a big deal now, but he’s got to get back to pitching sometime, right? By the way, my brother is very excited about this because he has a Capuano shirt. He also has a Sabathia shirt. We’ve been giving him guff that any player he promotes leaves the team. We’re thinking of buying a Suppan shirt for him for Christmas.

The Brewers are reportedly interested in ANYTHING THAT PITCHES. The following list are starting pitchers that have been named in rumors that the Brewers have interest in: Carl Pavano, Jarrod Washburn, John Lackey, Mark Mulder, Edwin Jackson, Randy Wolf, John Smoltz, Doug Davis, Todd Wellemeyer, Derek Lowe, Ben Sheets, and Javier Vasquez. Did I miss any starters?

Going with the ANYTHING THAT PITCHES trend, the Brewers signed John “The Llama” Halama.

The Brewers also went statutory and signed a 16 year old Shortstop from the Dominican named Santo Aybar.

Yahoo sports has a hot stove report that more than half the teams in the league are interested in Randy Wolf. This seems like a tough year for teams looking for starting pitchers. I’d rather take our chances with guys like Mulder than to end up with another contract like Suppans.

On the flip side, the crew has shed a lot of salary this year already (Cameron $10m, Hardy $4m, and Kendall $5m) That’s almost $20 million. And next year, we finally get rid of Hall and Suppan for another $20 million. They can afford to sign and trade for a big name guy (Halladay??). Or the team could probably afford to lock up Fielder. Is it worth spending big money on Fielder to keep him in Milwaukee??

The answer is YES! I believe he makes Braun better and I believe Braun helps him too. He is no longer the great liability at first he once was. I could see a 5 year, 100 mil deal so the Crew would have Braun and Fielder in the middle of the lineup for roughly the same amount of time.

Ever since Teddy Higuera’s big contract, it seems the Brewers are cursed when it comes to signing pitchers…

I agree. Keep Prince here. There will be some money freed up with Hall and Suppan off the books next year. Having Braun and Fielder in the middle of the lineup for 5 more years keeps the offense among the best in the NL. The standard most often brought up for the Brewers to follow is the Twins. Braun and Fielder are the equivalent to Mauer and Morneau. My only question is, will Braun be OK with Prince making that much more money than he is?

Braun should’ve thought of that before he signed the long extension then. If he wants to win, I don’t think he’d have a problem, but who knows I guess.

Yeah keep Prince locked up I fear that the market will not give you back in pitching what Prince is worth

I don’t think Braun will care. Fielder made something like $900,000 the year after hitting 50 home runs in a season. Braun took the long term deal. It pays him more over the beginning of his contract, but less than what he could of made in free agency.

Braun surprises me. He is very cocky, but he’s not a ’show me the money’ kind of guy. He know he’s good. He knows he could be worth twice as much in free agency. But like he said after he signed that deal..he’s rich. How much more money does a person need? I know he wants to win. Hopefully 2008 won’t be his last taste of the playoffs in a Brewers uniform.
