Lawrie Promoted to Huntsville
Brett Lawrie, who Milwaukee selected in the first round of the 2008 draft, has reportedly been promoted to double-A Huntsville. The Canadian catcher-turned-second baseman clubbed 13 HR and 65 RBI in 105 games with the Timber Rattlers this season – his first season in the minors.
Interestingly, Lawrie totally bypassed (A-Advaced) Brevard County in his promotion.
Mike Brownstein was promoted from Helena to take Lawrie’s roster spot.

More than likely for the Arizona Fall League. He’ll probably play in Huntsville all next year, too. He’s being fast-tracked, and while I know he has the bat speed and pop, I’m still wary of his defense and patience at the plate.

Then again, he IS 19.

I don’t know if it’s just organizational fluff, but anyone with the Brewers or Rattlers who ever talks about Lawrie raves about his defense, or at least the strides he’s made this season. It’s talked about like he’s going to be a plus defender, not that it’ll be a liability. That was hard to imagine when I was watching him look awkward out there even on simple plays.

I can see why they’d think it; he’s good athlete with a strong arm. I still think he’s be better at 3rd, but I can honestly say that over the year he improved by leaps and bounds, especially with off-balance throws and anticipation.
I’m more worried about his batting eye.

Well… Season’s pretty much over. I’m looking forward to September call-ups.

His swing is awful. His swing resembles Bill Hall’s.

All or nothing? That’s true.
But… he is 19. He’ll (hopefully) get better.

His swing is a little unconventional, but awful? The ball flies off his bat. He didn’t light the world on fire with the Rattlers, but the one thing I did see watching him was that he’s got an impressive bat. Every time he connects, he drives the ball somewhere. I think he just needs to work on his plate discipline, and defense of course.

True, and this is his first year of pro ball, but the first thing I noticed when watching him play was his big hole filled swing. Then again Salome’s swing is even worse looking and I can’t wait for him to get some reps in September in Milw.

I forgot about the Brewers… Not having a computer is killing me.
